Diffusing Essential Oils

You have heard about essential oils and would like to see about using them for your child with a disability. So where to start?  Diffusing essential oils is a great way to begin to use essential oils while gaining a wonderful benefit of using the respiratory system as an entry point.

When I first learned about essential oils my son was experiencing constant sinus infections and I was seeking ways to help elevate them.  By diffusing essential oils at night while he slept, he was deep breathing the oils into his sinus cavity & lungs which produced the intended effect.

Here are some pointers on getting started:

· Not all essential oils are created equal and most are perfume grade.  If you want to receive the underlying benefit of the plants properties - and isn’t that why you are diffusing in the first place? – be sure the oils actually come from plants by asking the company you are buying from about the process they use from planting the seeds to putting the bottle cap on.  Using organic plants is not sufficient to insure quality, the distillation process  is one of the most important aspect as here the properties of the plant are either captured or destroyed.

 · Heating essential oils changes their properties therefore I only use a cold air, ultrasonic diffuser with a timer.  I suggest running the timer for between four and six hours.

 · Start with an oil that can support many body systems such as lavender, copaiba, or lemon.

The most important part is just do it!  As you begin to use more essential oils you will learn what works for you and continue to add to your collection.  If you are anything like me that collection will indeed be quite large!
